Devotional Thought - God Will Get Your Attention

God Will Get Your Attention

Bible Reading: Genesis 32

Bible Text: “And Jacob was left alone, and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day”. – Genesis 32:24

Have you ever thought that you were wrestling with decisions or difficulties. Consider the situation of Jacob as he wrestled with and angel sent from God!

He was in a distressing situation and was alone. Our distresses often seem even greater when we must face them alone. This was God’s working in Jacob’s life. God was getting Jacob’s attention.

Jacob’s name held the meaning of “usurper or supplanter”. He had endured the name and its meaning all of his life. God was going to give him great blessing and change his name. He would become Israel, which means “wrestled with God” or “God contended”. This would be his name because “as a prince hast thou power with God and men”.

However, before the blessing was the struggle and the breaking of Jacob. Jacob was crippled before he was crowned as a prince with power. He had to be alone in his distress and spiritual confrontation. He had to realize that in the flesh there was no strength and to allow his resistance to God and His purpose to cease.

Do you pay attention to God?

“…have no confidence in the flesh.” Philippians 3:3b
