Thoughts For The 240^th Anniversary of the birth of the 

United States Of America

Tomorrow, July 4, we will be privileged to celebrate the 240^th anniversary of independence for these United States of America. As I enjoy another year of living in this great land of Freedom and Liberty, I am continually confronted with two vitally important questions:

1. Does the average person truly understand the great heritage they possess as a citizen of these United States of America? 

2. Does the average person understand their responsibility as Stewards of this great heritage which our fathers and fore-fathers provided for us?

As we take time to celebrate our numerous blessings of liberty and freedom and remember the labor and sacrifice required to secure and protect our liberty and freedom, we must give praise and thanks to our Sovereign LORD and those multitudes who fulfilled their responsibilities and maintained a good stewardship over this great heritage.  As we view the parades, enjoy the fireworks and think upon the images, such as Old Glory and the Statue of Liberty, which represent our freedom and liberty, I trust we will reflect upon the history of Ellis Island as the millions that have passed through that great harbor into a Republic that offered “Freedom and Opportunity” to all. I trust we will take the time to reflect on the tremendous price paid by our fathers and forefathers. In the wars of the past and present, many have and are still paying the ultimate price to secure and keep the freedom and heritage we enjoy today.

As the original thirteen colonies declared their separation from England they laid the foundation that would serve as an anchor for the new Republic being born. The second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence begins with the words that laid that sure foundation.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

After the successful long and bloody struggle to throw off the yoke of bondage, the colonies were faced with the awesome task of establishing a government for the “New Born” Republic. Having the wisdom from the history of many failed nations and civilizations, they decided the only form of government that could last would be one governed by an unchanging set of laws [The Constitution]. The Preamble to that great document reveals the wisdom and purpose of those who prepared it.

“We the people of the United States, in order to a form a more perfect union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

As I watch and listen, I wonder if our younger people truly realize the great national heritage they inherited at great expense and sacrifice of their forefathers.

Thinking about such a great gift quickly brings my thoughts to the greatest gift man could ever receive. The gift of Jesus Christ, God the Son, [John 3:16-18] opens the door to a multitude of gifts (i.e. Forgiveness of Sin; Freedom from the penalty and power of sin; Spiritual Life; Indwelling of the Holy Spirit; God’s Eternal Word; Fellowship with God; etc.).

I am also reminded of another great gift; the Church of Jesus Christ; which opens the door to many more gifts. One is the gift of being a part of a local Fundamental Bible Church. (i.e. Membership; Fellowship; Truth; Love; Service; Discipleship; Worship; etc.)

These three great gifts [Nation; Saviour; Church] have been provided for you at the expense and labors of those who went before. 

HAVE YOU CONSIDERED HOW VALUABLE AND IMPORTANT THESE GIFTS ARE IN YOUR LIFE?? IN THE LIFE OF YOUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN?

In Psalm 16, King David clearly recognized and understood the heritage of Israel and the great heritage of every person who comes to God through Scriptural Faith.

Psalm 16:5-6 “The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot. The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.”

Israel enjoyed a similar experience when God brought them out of bondage and slavery in Egypt though the wilderness and into the Promised Land. They had (1) God’s Word; (2) God as their Leader; (3) God’s assembly; (4) and God’s Promised Land.

President Barack Obama’s address at the National Prayer Breakfast on February 5, 2015 has reverberated through the corridors of the world and provoked shock and dismay in numerous quarters. Even a professor at the University of London commented on his shallow understanding of the Crusades. I hesitated to write anything on the subject because it would drag me into politics or into a sobering critique of Islam. I am not sure that at a time like this either distraction would be wise, so let me keep it to the minimum.

For those who did not hear the talk, it is sufficient to say that it was the most ill-advised and poorly chosen reprimand ever given at a National Prayer Breakfast. I have been to several and have never, ever heard such absence of wisdom in a setting such as this. ‎I wasn’t at this one but have heard the speech often enough to marvel at the motivation for such thoughts. President Obama basically lectured Christians not to get on a moral high horse in their castigation of the ISIS atrocities by reminding them that the Crusades and slavery were also justified in the name of Christ. Citing the Crusades, he used the single most inflammatory word he could have with which to feed the insatiable rage of the extremists. That is exactly what they want to hear to feed their lunacy.  ‎In the Middle East, history never dies and words carry the weight of revenge.

There is so much I would love to say in response but shall refrain. The President obviously does not understand the primary sources of either faith for him to make such a tendentious parallel. The predominant delight in his remarks would be in the Muslim world and the irreligious. The next day Geraldo Rivera, opining favorably, made the oft repeated lie that more people have been killed in the name of God than in any other cause. Try telling that to the Chinese and the Russians and the Cambodians and the victims of the Holocaust! ‎Such intellectual ignorance gains the microphone with pitiable privilege. If a thinking person doesn’t know the difference between the logical outworkings of a philosophy and the illogical ones, to say nothing of the untruth perpetrated, then knowledge has been sacrificed at the altar of prejudice.

But let me get to the President’s final statement, after he had wandered off into erroneous territory. That final remark was true. He said, “It is sin that leads us to distort reality.” He was right. In fact he embodied it in his talk. But there is good news for the President. At least in the Christian message forgiveness is offered for sin. In Islam it isn’t. You must earn it. May I dare suggest that if Christians had been burning Muslims and be-heading them, he would have never dared to go to Saudi Arabia and tell them to get off their high horse. He unwittingly paid a compliment to those who preach grace and forgiveness. That is the dominant theme of the Gospel. That is why we sit in courtesy listening to the distortion of truth, the abuse of a privilege, and the wrong-headedness of a message.

I cannot recall when I have heard such inappropriate words at so important an occasion, in such a time of crisis. The world is burning with fear and apprehension. We need a message that will inspire and encourage and redeem. Ironically, two years ago when Dr. Ben Carson spoke and made some comments about our medical plan and the tax system, the White House demanded an apology from him for straying into controversial terrain, because it felt his comments showed disrespect for the President.

This year’s National Prayer Breakfast speech was a blunder in thought. But there was a silver lining. In the end, President Obama blundered into the truth. Sin distorts… and only Jesus Christ restores the truth. Christ will ever rise up to outlive His pallbearers. Even presidents will have to get off their high horses then and recognize the Lord of life and hope and peace. There will be no speech making then. Only a prayer of surrender… which is what the National Prayer Breakfast was meant to be in the first place.

Bible Reading:  2 Corinthians 5:14 - 21

 

Bible Text:   “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”   2 Corinthians 5:17

 

What a wonderful truth we discover in this passage of God’s Word! 

 

No longer must we be bound with the fetters of sins committed in the distant past.  No more will we be shackled by the terrors of the memory of past deeds.  It is impossible to be burdened by the past if we are followers of Christ Jesus.

 

The words are plain and simple.  If you are in Christ then you are a new creature.  You, as a follower of Christ, have become something totally different.  You are a new creation.  You have been changed from a sinner to a saint, from a vagabond seeking shelter from the difficulties of life to a child of God who is a home with the Heavenly Father and under His protection.

 

Further, all of the old things are gone, completely gone.  And we have all things that are new.  These new things in our life are without the stain of sin. 

 

When we place our faith in Christ Jesus and follow Him, we are freed from the past and are become new creatures of God’s grace. 

 

Christ makes saints of sinners.

Bible Text: Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable (indescribable) gift. 2 Corinthians 9:15

The shepherds in the hills around Bethlehem were told the news by the angels. Mary and Joseph cared for the infant Christ in the stable. The shepherds visited and then left them rejoicing and telling everyone about the Christ Child. Mary kept all these things in her heart.

For many that is the story of Christmas. But it does not end there.

Christ Jesus, the very Son of Almighty God, was sent to this earth as a baby to be the perfect sacrifice for our sin. He came to die for you and for me so we could be forgiven and have a relationship with God the Father through God the Son, Jesus Christ.

In 2 Corinthians this is what the Apostle Paul was writing about when he gave thanks to God for the gift that was without comprehension. The greatest gift ever given is Christ Jesus.

Have you received the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ?

Christmas Is The Time

Christmas Is The Time
Christmas is the time to think

Christ was His dear Christmas gift
that in His love He gave us.

Senate Confirms Honorable to FERC

The U.S. Senate has confirmed the nomination of Colette Honorable to join the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).

Honorable, chairman of the Arkansas Public Service Commission since 2011 and the former president of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, will serve out the remainder of a term that ends in June 2017.

FERC Chairman Cheryl A. LaFleur congratulated Honorable on her confirmation:

“Colette brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the important issues we are facing. She and I worked together closely during her time as the President of NARUC, and I very much look forward to continuing that strong relationship when she joins the Commission.”

I said that I would bring you a review on the new “Exodus” movie. Today my friend Scotty told me he went and saw it with his wife last night. So I will give you his thoughts instead:

“I was sorry I watched it, because instead of lifting God high, it diminished Him. Atheist, Ridley Scott made the plagues logical rather than miraculous. God is depicted as a young boy, and he’s a brat. I was sorry that I paid money to support it.”

Scotty saved me from putting my money into the pockets of the blasphemous.

 Senate Committee Signals Thumbs-Up to Honorable's FERC Nomination

Colette D. Honorable's nomination to become a commissioner at FERC received bipartisan support during a hearing of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Thursday, and members said they hoped to complete the process before the congressional session ends early next month.

"She will be an outstanding member of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission...She's honest, she's fair, she listens, she works harder than anyone I've ever seen, and I just think she'll be a great commissioner," said Sen. Mark Pryor (D-AR), who, along with Sen. John Boozman (R-AR), introduced Honorable's nomination to the committee. "Just by virtue to Senator Boozman sitting here with me, you see that she has across-the-board support in Arkansas."

President Obama nominated Honorable, chairman of the Arkansas Public Service Commission (PSC), to FERC in August (see Daily GPI, Aug. 29). If confirmed by the Senate, Honorable would replace John Norris, who resigned from FERC effective Aug. 20, nearly three years before his term was due to expire (see Daily GPI, Aug. 8).

Honorable became a PSC commissioner in 2007 and has been chairman since 2011. She also serves as chairman of the board and president of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners. Before going to the PSC, Honorable served as executive director of the Arkansas Workforce Investment Board in 2007 and worked for Arkansas' then-Attorney General Mike Beebe in various roles, including as his chief of staff. She received a bachelor's degree from Memphis State University and a law degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

"If confirmed to serve at FERC, I would continue to build upon the work which I began several years ago in my beloved Arkansas, a place that has taught me so much: to do good, to listen to the opinions of others even when you don't agree, and to respect others and to serve the least of these," Honorable said. "This is an exciting time to work in the energy sector, but it is also a challenging time. I am up for this challenge."

Approval of Honorable's nomination by the committee seems certain, with most senators in attendance Thursday, representing both sides of the aisle, voicing their support.

"This is just a breath of fresh air because you're the first person that's been nominated to FERC that has truly had the experience to do the job that we're asking you to do," said Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV). "That's having regulatory experience, being recognized by your peers, having that expertise to bring immediately to something I think is very vulnerable, our grid system, and how we produced reliable, affordable and clean power in a balanced way. I appreciate that and look forward to your taking the reins."

Not present at the hearing was committee chairman Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA), whose reelection campaign remains undecided nearly a month after the general election (see Daily GPI,Nov. 5). Landrieu will face Republican Bill Cassidy in a runoff Saturday. Both Landrieu and Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), who chaired the hearing in her place, have said they support Honorable's nomination.

Consideration of Honorable's nomination had been delayed following the unexpected death of her husband in September (see Daily GPI, Sept. 11).

Demands A Correct Understanding of Physical and Spiritual Life

Col 2:6-7 “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.”

When a person receives Spiritual Life they receive Spiritual Capacity and Sight. The Spiritual Sight enables them to correctly understand that everything they receive physically and spiritually is a gracious bestowment of God.

God Graciously Chose:

1.   The Place and Time of your Conception.

2.   The Two People who would be your biological parents.

3.   To Allow your conception and birth.

4.   Every part of your physical design and natural abilities.

5.   To Allow all the events and experiences in your Life to this point, whether you consider

     them good or bad.

6.   To Awaken and Convict you of Sin and Call you to Christ For Salvation.

7.   To Provide all your needs both physical and spiritual.

8.   To Always work that which is best for you and to bring Honor and Glory to His name.

When a Christian matures enough to understand God’s work and blessing, they are able to develop a right attitude concerning what God has blessed them with and are capable of proper Thanksgiving in Word and Action.

Scriptural Christian Thanksgiving

Col 3:17 “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”

As the Holy Spirit gains control of the spirit of man, He gives understanding of the great truths of God’s Word and man is able to understand God’s abundant blessings and the reason for those blessings. With the understanding and heartfelt gratitude produced by the Holy Spirit and the understanding of God’s Word, the Christian will experience an “Attitude of Gratitude” and express heartfelt Thanksgiving.

   1. A Special Attitude and Action

Col 2:6-7 “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.”

Col 3:15-16 “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

As the Christian prays and studies the Word of God, the Holy Spirit works within their spirit, growing and developing Spiritual Fruit within the soul. As the Spiritual Fruit matures, the Christian’s thoughts, imaginations and attitudes are changed and molded to conform to God’s Word and Will. When the Christian’s thoughts are influenced and controlled by the Word of God, their Words and Actions will reflect their thoughts, imaginations and attitudes.

NOTE: WHEN THE WORD AND PEACE OF GOD RULE IN THE HEART, THE ATTITUDE OF THANKSGIVING WILL NATURALLY EXHIBIT ITSELF!!! BEFORE THERE CAN BE TRUTHFUL EXPRESSIONS OF THANKSGIVING THERE MUST FIRST BE A TRUTHFUL ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE!!!

   2. A Continuous Activity

Eph 5:20 “Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;”

When there is proper understanding of God and His provision, the thinking about and attitude toward God and His provision will produce heartfelt Gratitude that will produce Words and Actions of Thanksgiving. Since this is a State of Being, the Words and Actions will be natural and continuous. The mature Christian who experiences the Fruit of the Spirit in his life will be able to “Give Thanks Always for All Things.”

   3. Exhibited in Word and Action

Col 3:17 “And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”

The only means for man to reveal what he is thinking and feeling is through Words and Actions. If there is no real Attitude of Gratitude within the heart, the Words and Actions will eventually Reveal the true state of the heart.

NOTE: THE ONLY WAY OTHERS CAN KNOW OF YOUR GRATITUDE AND THANKFULNESS IS THROUGH YOUR WORDS AND ACTIONS!!!! THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS SECRET OR HIDDEN THANKFULNESS!!!

I pray your Thanksgiving Day will be the beginning of a complete new life of “Thanks living”!!!!

I pray the LORD provides the Grace, Wisdom and Guidance that every thought, intention, word and action would honor and glorify HIM!!!

Remembering Robert David Cupit, Jr. of Natchez, Mississippi

I became a friend of Bob Cupit when I hired him to manage the first radio station that I owned - KVLA 1400AM in Vidalia, Louisiana.   He was a musician, vocalist, disc jockey, and radio station manager, and more!  He is missed.  Pray for the family.

Remembering Robert David Cupit, Jr.

Graveside Services for Robert David Cupit, Jr., 77 of Natchez, MS will be held at Highland Park Cemetery, Sicily Island on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 3:00 PM with Rev. Glenn Hargill officiating. The family will receive friends at Young’s Funeral Home, Ferriday from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 12, 2014. Interment will follow under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home.

Robert David Cupit, Jr. was born on Friday, February 5, 1937 in Natchez, MS and passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at Riverland Medical Center in Ferriday.

Mr. Cupit was preceded in death by his wife, Lou Anna “Lagrange” Cupit; R.D. Cupit, Sr. and Theda Mae “Benge” Cupit; daughter, Theda M. Cupit; brothers: Earl Cupit, Don Cupit, Danny Cupit; and sister, Betty Glascock.

Survivors include daughter, Pam Smith of Jonesville, LA; son, Robert D. Cupit, III of Natchez, MS and sister, Shirley Lovette of Pasadena, Texas. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Banana Republic Saints

There is now posted on youtube a brand new documentary titled: "Banana Republic Saints" that is produced by Clayton Van Huss.  Lydia Hill was one of the camera operators for the film.  Clayton is a student in film at East Tennessee State University and produced this as one of his film projects.  He graduates on Saturday.  Congratulations to Clayton on his upcoming graduation and for his very well-done film.  I encourage you to view it on youtube at:

Report from SWRC Trip to Honduras

The mission group sponsored by Southwest Radio Church of the Air, Inc., was in Honduras Saturday April 20, 2013 until Saturday April 27, 2013.

Members included Dr. Noah W. Hutchings, President and Pastor of SWRC and his wife Kim Ky; Dr. Larry Spargamino, Associate Pastor and Secretary of SWRC; Nola Crick, Member of SWRC; Dr. Ron Suitor, M.D., Cardiologist from Oklahoma City and physician of Dr. Hutchings; Clayton VanHuss a film maker and student at East Tennessee State University; Dr. Kenneth C. Hill, Vice-President of SWRC and his daughter, Lydia; Luis Vega, Latin American Director of Siloam International and formerly the teacher on SWRC's Spanish-language program Profecias Biblicas and his daughter Nancy, and Dixie David Bahrona who is presently completing his degree in Civil Engineering.

The group ministered in the Sunday services at the Central CAM Church in Siguatepeque, two Pastors' Conference days of meetings, two days of outreach and evangelism at an elementary school in a barrio in Siguatepeque, and distributed tracts in the marketplaces and on the streets.  They also visited Estero V.E.C.A 89.1 radio that SWRC has been helping to fund its development.  Kenneth Hill was interviewed on the station, telling about ministry in the USA and Honduras.

The mission endeavor was a worthwhile effort!

Services for Hubert Clyde Hill

Hubert Clyde Hill, 86, of Knoxville, formerly of Kingsport, died on Friday at Jefferson City Health & Rehabilitation Center. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday (April 7, 2013) at Scott County Funeral Home, with the funeral service to follow at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City Va. with military rites.

January 30, 1927  -  April 5, 2013

January 30, 1927 brought joy to Mary Ruth (Kern) Hill and her husband Henry Joseph Hill in the mining camp at Toms Creek in Wise County, Virginia with the birth of their first-born, Hubert Clyde Hill.

The youngster grew and played with his siblings as each arrived in the Hill household.  Tragedy came early for Hubert when his father was killed in the mine in 1935.

Too young to work at a regular job to help feed the family, Hubert began working at odd jobs helping anyone who would pay him to work in the fields.  He later joined the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp in Scott County and worked as a water boy before graduating to more of the regular tasks that resulted in many of the beautiful forest areas of the County.

In 1942 he moved to Kingsport to work at the Eastman plant.  He was employed there until his retirement in 1986 with time out for his service during World War II.

Hubert was a tank driver in the Special Tank Battalion 738^th known as the Great Speckled Bird unit.  His tank was always at the head of the column with the loud speakers to ask for surrender of the enemy.  He served in the European Theater and was involved in many battles, including the Battle of the Bulge.  He earned a number of medals and ribbons including the Bronze Star Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart Medal and the European American Middle Eastern Service Ribbon.  Wounds received during his time of service resulted in life-long excruciating pain.  After recovery in the hospitals of Europe and the United States, he was honorably discharged.

He returned home to marry his sweetheart, Erma Lee Harless, whom he had met as one of his pen pals while in the Army.  Together they established a home in the Morrison City community of Kingsport and raised two children, Brenda and Kenneth.

Shortly after his marriage, he found salvation in Christ Jesus his Lord on an altar at the Morrison City Mission Church.  Over the years he became an accomplished Bible teacher and leader of the church, serving as a Deacon for over 60 years.  He was a student of the Word of God and lived its precepts in his daily life.  He was the head of his household and the leader of his family.  He led his family to follow Christ and to trust in the Lord in all things.

In 1956 the family was again impacted by tragedy when a drunk driver crashed into the family as they were traveling to Christmas festivities.  Hubert was pinned in the car with multiple injuries including the amputation of his left leg.  After much surgery and about a year in the hospital, he returned home and renewed his responsibilities.  He gave thanks to God for his healing and thanks to his friends for helping sustain the family during that time of devastation. 

He was a man of determination.  He worked hard raising a huge garden each year, serving the community, working at Eastman, tending to his family, and serving the Church and the work of Christ Jesus.

In his final years, while suffering from the ravages of Alzheimer’s, he continued to recite scripture, sing hymns, and pray well past the time that it was expected that would be possible.

He had a deep sense of responsibility and worked to show that any handicap would not deter him from giving an honest day’s effort on the job, at home, or at church.  Although his pain was unrelenting, he never gave any indication of his suffering to those with whom he worked and worshipped. 

Hubert has gone to be with His Savior to enjoy an eternal  life that holds no more pain and suffering.  The joy of his grand reunion with those who have gone before him cannot be imagined.

He has left behind a family that loved him beyond measure.  His wife of 66 years, Erma Lee (Harless) Hill; daughter and son-in-law Brenda and Ed Miller; son and daughter-in-law Kenneth and Janet Hill; grand-sons Nathan Miller and wife Ashley; Matthew Hill and wife Amanda; and Timothy Hill; grand-daughters  Lee-Anna Miller Thomas and husband Rocky, and Lydia Hill; great-grandchildren  Presley Miller, Jon Thomas, Caleb Hill, and Abigail Hill; his brothers Carl Hill and wife Reta, Rev. Joe Hill and wife Joann, and sisters Henrietta Roach and Carolyn Cunningham and husband Bill.

Correction Mission Trip April 20 - 27, 2013

MISSION TRIP PLANNED - Corrected Dates
April 20 through 27, 2013 are the dates for a mission effort sponsored by the Southwest Radio Church headquartered in Oklahoma City.  The plans are for a Pastors' Conference of three days in the day with evangelistic and worship services at night.  Other activities include evangelistic tract distribution in schools and in public locations.  Contact Southwest Radio Church at 800-652-1144 for costs and further information.
